How to Launch on Product Hunt: A Step-by-Step Checklist

How to launch on Product Hunt: a step-by-step checklist

This is a step-by-step checklist how to get the most out of your Product Hunt launch.

I've seen plenty of founders mess up their Product Hunt launch because they went live without much thought. The problem is, you only get one shot. And since Product Hunt is the biggest directory out there with the most traffic, it pays to shine when you launch on it.

Make sure your product is ready first

Before you launch on Product Hunt, make sure your product is at a high quality level first. That is why at LaunchPanda we built a roadmap that launches you in the right order. You start with directories that give you feedback, so you can sharpen your product before the big day. Then you move to directories that build up your Domain Rating. Only after that do you scale up with a Product Hunt launch.

Why a Product Hunt launch is worth it

Product Hunt pulls in a lot of traffic, around 4 to 5 million visits a month, and a spot near the top of the day puts you in front of a big slice of it. Ranking in the top 3 can send you thousands of visitors and hundreds of signups in a single day (of course that depends on whether your website and offer are good enough to convert them).

But traffic is not the main prize. Where most directories are worth it for the backlink, Product Hunt's direct links are nofollow, so the real value is the prestige. If you rank high, you earn a badge that says you were number 1, 2, or 3 Product of the Day, and you can show that off on your site and socials for years.

Get your account and maker profile ready

So it all starts with your creator profile. You can make this profile well in advance and start actually using the site, looking for tools and leaving comments. If you become active on the platform, you also start building a network that could help get you upvotes later down the line. And generally, a brand new account that shows up only to launch looks like spam.

Prepare your assets and first comment

Have everything ready and double-checked before the day:

  • A clean thumbnail and gallery images
  • A short demo video, which seems to be the norm among Product Hunt launches that take it seriously. It also helps to show yourself in it, since humans tend to want to see humans, and it builds your personal brand
  • Keep the tagline and description as short and punchy as possible, so users immediately know what your startup is about
  • A first comment, ready to paste right under your launch. This is a good place to explain more and tell your story, so make it personal

Schedule your launch and build hype early

Then another tip. Product Hunt lets you schedule your launch in advance, so do it. Scheduling gives you a locked date to build toward and build some hype.

Once your date is set, people can already see your tool. Start telling people about it, post on X and LinkedIn, message your email list, mention it in the communities you belong to. Basically mention it wherever you can.

The point is not to ask for votes yet. The point is that when the day arrives, nobody hears about it for the first time. You want a group of people already waiting, so the moment you go live you get a burst of activity instead of silence.

Pick the best day to launch on Product Hunt

Also, some days do seem to have a bit of an edge. Tuesday and Thursday seem to get the most traffic, but they also draw the most competition, so it takes far more votes to reach the top. If you want a better chance to rank high, pick other days. Weekends are the opposite, quiet enough to rank near the top but with fewer people around to see it. It all depends on how confident you are in your tool.

I have seen makers settle on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday as a sweet spot. Those have enough traffic to matter with a little less of the competition.

Know when the day resets in your timezone

One thing that is often overlooked is that your launch time depends on your timezone. The Product Hunt day resets at 12:01 AM Pacific Time. So for me, living in Amsterdam, that means my launch day starts around 9 AM. Make sure you know when the day resets in your own timezone. Then make those first hours count.

On launch day, tell the people you know

Build a simple support list ahead of time, friends, teammates, customers, subscribers, communities. When you go live, reach out and let them know.

Here is the important part. Do not ask people to upvote you. Product Hunt penalizes vote-begging, and blasting "upvote me" links is the fastest way to get buried. Instead, tell them you just went live, share the link, and ask for honest feedback. The votes follow naturally, and they come from people who actually engaged.

Reply to every comment and hold momentum

Then when d-day arrives, your launch, treat it as a full day of work. I would advise you to reply to every comment, answer their questions, and say thank you. In general, keep the conversation going.

Of course you also want to keep posting on your socials. If you stay active there and take people along your launch journey, you hopefully pull in more votes that way.

Do not stop at Product Hunt

Product Hunt is one launch on one day. The backlinks and traffic compound when you spread your launch across many directories, which is why it is worth lining up a wider directory launch plan and picking Product Hunt alternatives to hit next.
