How to check how old a website is

How old is a website? Type its domain into the checker above. It asks the domain's registry for the day the domain was first registered, the same date a WHOIS lookup used to show, and counts the time since. That makes it a website age checker for any site with its own domain.

  • The date restarts after a lapse. If a domain expires and someone registers it again, its age starts over. An old brand can sit on a young registration.
  • Domain age isn't site age. To see when a site first went live, look up its oldest snapshot on the Wayback Machine.
  • Subdomains share their domain's age. A site on a hosting subdomain like yourapp.vercel.app has no registration of its own, so check your own domain once you have one.

Does domain age matter for SEO?

Not by itself. Google's John Mueller has said that domain age helps nothing on its own. Older domains do tend to rank better, but that's because they've had years to collect links and history, not because of the date.

So a three-year-old domain with no links gets no head start from its age. Treat domain age as a hint about how long a site has had to build authority, not as a score Google reads.

What does a young domain need to rank?

Links and time in Google's index. A new domain starts with neither, which is why it can take weeks before Google shows it at all.

  1. Get indexed first. Submit your sitemap in Search Console and link your key pages from your homepage. Here's how to get indexed by Google fast.
  2. Earn your first links. Other sites linking to you is how Google finds and trusts a new domain. Startup directories are the quickest first links for a new product.
  3. Give it a few months. Authority builds slowly. Here's how long it takes to grow Domain Rating.

How this domain age checker works

It uses RDAP, the Registration Data Access Protocol. RDAP is the registry lookup that replaced WHOIS for .com and other generic domains in January 2025. We find the registry for the domain's ending, ask it for the domain's record and read the registration date. No paid data, no estimates.

Some registries don't publish registration dates, like .de, .ch and .com.au, and a few country codes have no public RDAP service yet. For those, the checker tells you so instead of guessing.

Age is half the picture. The DR checker shows how strong a domain's backlinks are.
