AI answers now quote Reddit more than almost any other site, so a Reddit account that can actually post is worth having. The fastest way to earn the karma for it: answer questions in small, active subreddits every day for a week, while your account ages in the background.

Here's why that matters now, how much karma you really need, and the exact routine.

Why does Reddit karma matter now?

Reddit has become one of the main places AI gets its answers. Profound analyzed 680 million citations and found Reddit is the most cited site in Google's AI Overviews and in Perplexity, and the second most cited in ChatGPT, right behind Wikipedia.

  • 3. Forbes1.1%

That's no accident. Google pays Reddit a reported 60 million dollars a year for its data, and OpenAI signed a similar deal a few months later. So when your product comes up in a helpful Reddit thread, that thread can end up in the answer someone gets from ChatGPT or Google. We dig into that in why Reddit posts boost your Google and AI traffic.

There's one catch. The subreddits with real reach lock out new accounts. Every subreddit with more than a million members on our roadmap asks for karma before you can post, from 10 in r/startups to 100 in r/technology. Most of them also want an account that's at least 30 days old.

What is Reddit karma?

Karma is Reddit's reputation score. You earn it when people upvote your posts and comments, and lose some when they downvote. It isn't exactly one point per upvote, but more upvotes still means more karma.

Your profile shows two kinds:

  • Post karma comes from the posts you submit.
  • Comment karma comes from your comments.

Each subreddit decides what it checks. Some look at post karma, some at comment karma, most at your total. Many also set a minimum account age. On top of that, Reddit keeps a hidden Contributor Quality Score that moderators can filter on, so verify your email and use your account like the real person you are.

How much karma do you need to post?

It depends on the subreddit, and the big ones ask the most. Of the 36 startup-friendly subreddits on our roadmap, 17 need karma, from 5 in r/SaaS to 100 in r/technology, and 18 need a minimum account age. Move the sliders to see where you can post today.

Limits from LaunchPanda's subreddit roadmap. Moderators change them now and then, so check a subreddit's rules before you post.

You can also use it as a standalone Reddit karma checker, with fields for your exact numbers.

Looking at a subreddit that isn't on the list? Check its sidebar rules and wiki. Many moderators don't publish the exact number, so the removal message is often the first place you'll see it.

How to get karma on Reddit fast

You don't need a trick, you need a routine. This is the one that works.

  1. Verify your email and fill out your profile. A real-looking account gets filtered less.
  2. Pick 3 to 5 small, active subreddits in your niche that have no karma limit. It's easier to stand out there, and their members are your future users.
  3. Sort by New and answer early. The first helpful answer on a fresh post collects the upvotes. Late answers barely get read.
  4. Answer beginner questions you actually know. One writer estimates that about 20 good answers get you past 50 karma.
  5. Be specific. Numbers, steps and what you tried earn upvotes. "Great post" earns nothing.
  6. Post one genuinely useful thing, like a lesson you learned or a teardown, without a link.
  7. Show up every day for a week. Ten minutes a day beats an hour once.

Here's what step 5 looks like in practice.

Replying to: How did you get your first 10 users?

What worked for us: we found 3 subreddits where our users already ask for help, answered 2 or 3 questions a day for two weeks, and only shared our link when someone asked. That got us our first 14 signups. Happy to share the exact posts if it helps.

Illustrative example. Same subreddit, same topic, very different karma.

How long does it take to get karma?

About a week of daily, helpful comments is usually enough to clear limits between 10 and 50 karma. Getting to 100 takes a few weeks.

Account age is the part you can't rush. 12 of the 36 subreddits on our roadmap want an account that's 30 days old. So create yours now, a month before you need it, and earn your karma while it ages.

Can you get karma without posting?

Yes. Comments earn comment karma, and many subreddits count it toward their limit. If posting feels risky on a new account, stick to comments for the first week. It's also the faster route, because answering a question takes less effort than writing a post that lands.

What should you avoid?

Some shortcuts look tempting and get accounts banned:

  • Karma farming subreddits. Moderators check where your karma came from.
  • Buying karma or upvotes. It breaks Reddit's rules and gets accounts suspended.
  • Reposting viral content or pasting the same comment everywhere.
  • Promoting in your first comments. Earn trust before you link anything.
  • Running several accounts to upvote yourself. Reddit catches vote manipulation.

What to do once you have karma

Start where self-promotion is welcome, like r/SideProject, r/indiehackers and r/LaunchPanda. Then move to the promo threads in the bigger subreddits, like the monthly Share Your Startup thread in r/startups or Showoff Saturday in r/webdev.

Before you post anything promotional, read how to post on Reddit without getting banned and how to promote your startup on Reddit.
